Height of Controls

The height and placement of controls (such as light switches, thermostats, and appliance controls) in a residential house should be designed to accommodate various reach ranges, particularly considering any obstacles.

The height measurements for controls, such as switches and thermostats, are typically referenced to the centre point of the control. This standard ensures consistency and ease of use for a wide range of users.

Here are the general guidelines:

  • The control height is measured from the centre of the control panel.
  • The bottom of the microwave should be no lower than 38 cm.
  • The bottom of the microwave should be no higher than 137 cm.
  • Microwave heights range from 25 to 38 cm.
  • To determine the minimum and maximum control height, we need to add half of the microwave height to the height of its bottom edge.

  • The control height is measured from the center of the control panel.
  • The bottom of the lower oven is about 72 cm from the floor.
  • The oven control panel heights are around 9 cm.
  • Eye-level single oven heights range from 50 to 65 cm.
  • Eye-level double oven heights range from 88 to 90 cm.
  • To determine the minimum and maximum control height, we need to add 72 cm to the minimum and maximum oven heights and then subtract 4.5 cm from each of them.
