Dining Tables

Room Dimension Options List

Clearance Behind Occupied Dining Chairs

To ensure comfortable movement behind occupied dining chairs, the following clearances are recommended, measured from the edge of the table:

Overall Chair Depth (cm)Minimum Clearance (cm)Ideal Clearance (cm)Optimal Clearance (cm)

60120136150
70130146160

Overall Chair Depth: Defined here as the total front-to-back measurement of the chair, including the backrest and any structural components that might extend beyond the seat.

Seat Depth: This is the measurement from the front edge of the seat to the back edge where the seat meets the backrest. It represents the depth of the seating area where a person sits. The minimum seat depth is 38 cm.

Chair Push Back Clearance: This is the space needed to push back the chair from the table, and it should be 10 – 26 cm.

The UNDER-Table Clearance for 1 Person

To determine the depth of under-table clearance needed to accommodate a person comfortably, we should consider the space required for the chair and the legroom.

  • Chair Depth (portion under the table):A typical chair seat depth that fits under the table: ~30 cm.
  • Legroom Needed: Comfortable legroom: 20-30 cm.
Per PersonDepth – Chair Depth + Legroom
    Minimum Space 50 cm
    Ideal Space60 cm

This means that the dining table should be at least 100 cm deep, ideally 120 cm deep. However, in Europe, tables with a depth of 90 cm are often sold. This assumes that the table is not fully occupied on a daily basis, or it can be suitable for a family with children who do not require as much space under the table as adults.
